Born with a natural desire to push his boundaries, Karl Bushby has always been fascinated by new horizons. After spending 11 years in the British Army and facing some turbulent personal challenges, Karl set off on a life-changing journey—and one that’s still ongoing today. In 1998, he departed from Punta Arenas, Chile, on foot, with the ultimate goal of reaching his hometown in England after walking around the world, through 25 countries and across 58,000km. To date, he’s survived snake-infested Columbian rivers, the unpredictable terrain of the Canadian Rockies and a harrowing crossing of the Bering Strait. While the Russian leg of his journey has been bogged down by VISA complications, Karl’s tenacity keeps him going. “Quite frankly,” he says. “It would be harder to actually stop.”
